Poochie's Puppy PageThe purpose of this little site is to let people know about Puppy Linux and provide links to learn more. Plus it will be a little download mirror for selected Puppy Stuff. If Puppy affectionados choose to join and log in to create more discussion and good news that would be great! Puppy Linux is a small distribution that is small enough to run entirely in RAM on the average modern computer. Unlike Knoppix and other LIVE CDs that run off the CD drive Puppy allows for the CD to be ejected and the CD used for other stuff - if you have enough system RAM not to need to have the CD mounted by the RAM disk. Since it is easy to customize many pup fans are releasing some surprising variations for quite a pack of puppies indeed. Barry's Puppy has spawned many breeds - Teen Pup, Pizza Pup, Kids Pup, EcoPup and pcPuppyOS and many more. The hardest part about running Puppy is often choosing which one you like best. Since Puppy is often under 64 Mb it gives new life to old boxen that are a little too slow (or have too small a hard drive) for the most modern Windows (tm) operating systems. My old 550 Mhz PIII runs as well as or better on Puppy than it ever did on Win98 all those years, and since Puppy is so compact Win98 doesn't notice it is there when I boot up to play old DOS games that I like for pastimes. And most of the time Puppy doesn't access the hard drive anyway because I use a USB stick for my home directory! |
